The President and Members of the Board of Trustees extend to you a warm welcome to the official website of Ummu Zavaya the headquarters of Al Fassiya Ash Shazuliya Thareeqa in Sri Lanka.
Al Fassiya Ash Shazuliya Thareeqa was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) by Marhoom As-Seyyed Ahamed Ibunu Salihul Yamani in the Gregorian Year 1866, corresponding to Islamic Hijri-Year 1283 and established the first Zaviya in Sri Lanka in the Gregorian Year 1867, corresponding to Islamic Hijri Year 1284.
Ummu Zavaya was founded in the Hijri year 1303 / 1886 CE with the arrival His Holiness Marhoom Ash Sheik Muhammad Salih Moulana Al Fassy (Raliallahu Anhu) in Sri Lanka from the "Baith Ul Fassi" Makkah Al Mukarramah, in the present Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Since 1303 AH / 1886 CE, with the arrival of His Holiness Marhoom Ash Sheik Muhammad Salih Moulana Al Fassy (Raliallahu Anhu) in Sri Lanka, all Sheiks (spiritual leaders of the Al Fassiya Ash Shazuliya) who visited Sri Lanka stayed at the Ummu Zavaya. This tradition is followed to this date. They made short visits to other Zaviyas from Ummu Zavaya.
On Tuesday, 11th Zul Qadah 1309 AH / 7th June 1892 C.E the annual recital of Manaqib Ush Shazuliya commenced at the Ummu Zavaya. This is being held annually to date without a break. This is the oldest function at Ummu Zavaya.
The grand function at Ummu Zavaya is the Reading of the Shamail Thirmizi from the 1st to the 12th days of Rabi Ul Awwal – Meelad Un Nabi. It is held every year without a break for over a century now. This was started on Wednesday 25th April 1906 CE / 1st Rabi Ul Awwal 1324 AH.
In the year 1960 CE / 1379 AH Ummu Zavaya was extended to accommodate the growing number of Ikhwans/followers of the thareeqa. This could be considered one of the major milestone in the history of Ummu Zavaya.
On the 12th of Rabi Ul Awwal 1419 / 7th July 1998 Ummu Zavaya inaugurated an Arabic College at its own premises to produce Ulemas (Moulavies) of the Sunnath Wal Jamaath order.
On the 11th November 1998 Ummu Zavaya laid the foundation stone for a three storied building to house the Arabic College. On 14th November 2002 the new three storied building was ceremonially opened and the Madrasa students went in to occupation.
Students at Ajwad Al Fassy Arabic College are provided with hostel facilities, meals and uniform. A nominal fee is charged but it hardly meets the cost.
The annual budget of Ummu Zavaya for the year 2011 is estimated at Rs. 4,130,950.00 (approximately US$ 42,000.00). Of this The expenditure incurred to maintain Ajwad Al Fasasy Arabic College costs the Ummu Zavaya Rs. 3,312,950.00 while the budget for Ummu Zavaya maintenance is Rs 818,000.00. The funding is mostly from donations from Members of the Board of Trustees, Congregation Members and other benevolent donors.
